Omega Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is poised to address Black Maternal and Infant Health. The premature deaths of Black moms and babies are historically rooted in enslavement; today, they are seen as structural racism resulting in unnecessary deaths. Black women in the United States have a 2-3 times greater death rate when compared to their White counterparts. Driving factors for this disparity are inequities, social injustice, implicit bias, and systemic racism. Evidence suggests growing cases of Black women feeling unheard, unseen, and often neglected throughout the pregnancy and birthing care experiences. This diverse panel of healthcare and civic professionals will focus on Black maternal health, culturally-sensitive and evidence-based birth outcome solutions providing a pathway to social advocacy.
