Labor Day is a yearly tribute to the contributions that workers have made to the strength and prosperity of the United States of America. Labor Day gives workers a much needed day of rest from work and is usually celebrated with barbecues, picnics, parades, and shopping.Labor Day has its origins in the central labor union movement. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
