First Day of Pride Month

Juneteenth Day

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. It is also called Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day. Juneteenth is a bittersweet holiday of celebration for many African Americans, a de facto second Independence Day commemorating the end of slavery

Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note slaves were freed two and a half years earlier with President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863, yet slavery had continued! There are several versions of the story as to why it took two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation for this important news to reach Texas- the messenger was murdered, information was deliberately withheld to keep the slave labor force on the plantations, and yet another story that slave owners wanted to reap the benefits of one last cotton harvest.

The important order read to the people of Texas by Major General Gordon Granger began with “The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer.”

Labor Day

Labor Day is a national holiday in the United States celebrated annually on the first Monday in September to honor and recognize the American labor movement. Labor Day is a yearly tribute to the contributions that workers have made to the strength and prosperity of the United States of America. Labor Day gives workers a much needed day of rest from work and is usually celebrated with barbecues, picnics, parades, and shopping.
Labor Day has its origins in the central labor union movement. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Founders’ Day

Iota Phi Theta Fraternity was founded on September 19, 1963 at Morgan State College (now Morgan State University) and is now the nation’s fifth largest predominately African-American social service fraternity. The Honorable Founders of Iota Phi Theta were: Albert Hicks, Lonnie Spruill, Jr., Charles Briscoe, Frank Coakley, John Slade, Barron Willis, Webster Lewis, Charles Brown, Louis Hudnell, Charles Gregory, Elias Dorsey, Jr., and Michael Williams.
